Background
The demand in recent years for traffic-free cycling opportunities, and the continuing unsuitability of most of the Public Rights of Way network for cycling, has led to the development of numerous new cycle trails throughout the UK. Many new trails are built to sustainable standards using IMBA trail design and construction principles, but land and trail managers have increasingly identified the need to assess such trails against a recognised standard. The IMBA-UK Trail Accreditation Service is intended to fulfil this need.
The Assessment Process
The assessment is conducted in two parts, with scores apportioned firstly to an overview of the whole facility, and secondly to an assessment of each individual trail. This leads to an evaluation as excellent, very good, good, fair or poor as appropriate.

- Promotion
- Individual Trails
- Legal status
- Surface and width
- Sustainable Design and Construction
- Safety to riders and others
- Suitability for the skills and fitness of the intended users from families to enthusiasts
- Safety to others involved in work or recreation on the site
- Trail Grading, Signs and Waymarking
Assessments are undertaken by suitably-experienced volunteers drawn from the membership of IMBA-UK.
